Purpose and Content

This PhD workshop focuses on the cultural dimensions of organizational studies and comparative management research. The workshop participants discuss their research by presenting and discussing papers. Furthermore, the workshop allows us to discuss some of the basic and classic research traditions as well as recent developments of cross-cultural management research. Some of the fundamental readings will be discussed. Central to the PhD workshop is Hofstede's study, which continues to shape the field. In 1980 Hofstede published an influential study which changed international organizational studies. Hofstede's findings have since turned into a Kuhnian paradigm, which at times has been overused and even abused. A careful reading of Hofstede's work is essential to any scholarship that deals with organization, cross-cultural management and national culture. The second (2001) edition of Hofstede's book provides what is to date the most thorough review of international organizational studies research. Even more recent applications of Hofstede's work have been published in a revised and updated version of his popular text "Cultures and Organizations: Software of the Mind" (2005) (with Gert Jan Hofstede as a co-author). The other faculty members have in their own work been inspired by Hofstede in various ways. Mark Peterson has been involved in a number of large cross-national studies with various approaches, and he is eminently able to put Hofstede's work in context. Gert Jan Hofstede will focus on cross-cultural methodology and teaching methods.
