PhD Programmes

Do you consider applying for a PhD programme at the Department of Business Communication (BCom)?

We have collected some of the frequently asked questions about the possibilities of being accepted to a PhD programme at BCom.

How can I apply for admission to a PhD programme?

If you wish to apply for a PhD scholarship at the department, there are the following possibilities:

  1. Open scholarships at faculty level announced twice a year
  2. Internal PhD scholarships at the department
  3. Externally funded PhD scholarships. These will often be financed through The Danish Research Council for the Humanities (FKK) or Social Sciences (FSE)
  4. Industrial PhD Initiative. The industrial PhD Initiative is programme in which the PhD project is written in association with a company. For further information, please visit the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation website about the programme: http://www.erhvervsphd.dk

You will be enrolled as a PhD student at Business and Social Sciences regardless of which type of scholarship you have been granted.

The different options cover different ways of funding your salary during the PhD programme. You will find more information on funding opportunities for a PhD programme at the website about our PhD programme.

When is the application deadline?

The application deadline depends on the type of PhD scholarship that you apply for.

  1. Department scholarships will be announced under available positions at the faculty website.
  2. The open scholarships will be announced at the same page
  3. Application deadlines for externally funded PhD scholarships depend on the source of funding. In terms of FKK and FSE it is often around 1 March.
  4. There are four application deadlines for the Industrial PhD Initiative each year.

In which research areas can I study?

The Department is characterised by an active research environment focusing on language, communication, and culture in business contexts. All PhD students at BCom will be affiliated with one of our research groups. Therefore, it is important that your project subject is relevant for one of the research areas of the research groups. You will be affiliated with one of the following groups:

How do I get started?

The first step to becoming a PhD student at BCom is to find out which research area you would like to work in and to write down an idea for a research project. As mentioned above, the project must be related to lexicography, corporate communication, knowledge communication or translation and interpreting.

Please read about research areas, publications, etc., at the websites of relevant research groups in order to make sure that your project matches the research group profile.

What are the admission requirements for PhD students at BCom?

Apart from meeting the general admission requirements for PhD scholarships, internal departement PhD scholarships also presuppose a Master's degree relevant to the teaching activities of the Department.

If you wish to do a research project in lexicography, knowledge communication or translation and interpreting you must have a Master's degree in English, French, Spanish or Germen.

If you are contemplating a PhD project in corporate communication your background might be an MA in communication, languages or media science, but other MA degrees may also be relevant.

What are my duties as a PhD student?

The PhD programme is a research programme in which writing the PhD project will be your main task. You will also be required to work at the Department, which typically involves a limited number of teaching and information activities. A third element in the programme is participation in research courses. The courses must correspond to a full-year equivalent (FTE) of 0.5 in total (30 ECTS).

What is the academic environment like?

You will be affiliated with one of the Department research groups according to your research area. BCom's PhD students will only be affiliated with the strongest and most well-established research groups to ensure that PhD students are offered a well-functioning research environment and thus also the best PhD programme possible. An affiliated supervisor will also monitor the PhD project of each individual PhD student closely.

The Department also encourages PhD students to study at a research institution abroad for a longer period of time. This will allow you to do research in an alternative research environment and in this way gain inspiration and establish an international network. You will also get the chance to present your project at conferences in and outside of Denmark.

What are the career possibilities?

The PhD programme is a research programme directed towards e.g. a research career at universities and other research institutions. However, since more and more private and public companies also look for employees with research backgrounds, a PhD degree is considered a good entry point for an attractive labour market.

At the Business and Social Sciences website for PhD students, you will find more general information for potential PhD students, e.g. details on information meetings, application form and general guidelines for the PhD programme.
