The PhD environment

a. What can you expect?
As a PhD student, you are attached to a department along with the other academic members of staff at Aarhus School of Business. It goes without saying that the academic environments differ from department to department, but the idea of the PhD programme is for PhD students to be part of the academic environment on equal terms with other members of staff during their enrolment.

On the one hand, this means that as a PhD student you have access to the same facilities as other academic members of staff, and the possibility for subject-related sparring, not only from your appointed supervisor. On the other hand, it also means that you must be prepared to contribute to the development of the academic environment, both as regards research and teaching activities.

Facilities include office space, a PC, telephone, secretarial assistance, a share in the department's annual grant, and the possibility of study trips and participation in scientific conferences in Denmark and abroad.

b. What is expected of you?
As can be seen from the above, a PhD programme is to a very large extent an individual affair, organised by and for the individual student. It should therefore be emphasised that considerable demands will be made on your independence, your work discipline, and your ability to give and receive subject-related criticism in a constructive way. This kind of criticism is an extremely important part of the scientific process.

You should also be willing to make a contribution and mix with people at all academic levels, from first-year bachelor students to distinguished professors.
