Focus on energy and environment

Sustainable Campus focuses on developing Business and Social Sciences to become a sustainable work environment and educational institution by working in a focused way on reducing our energy consumption and reduce our general burdening of the environment.

By reducing the main academic area's emissions of e.g. CO2, wastewater and waste, we obtain savings - money that can be spent better in different areas, e.g. for more positions for researchers, better competency development or better facilities for the students

How do we do it?
This will be done by reducing the main academic area’s energy consumption by 20% and by reducing the CO2 emissions by 20% between 2009 and 2015. Through this project, we want to create a model for work regarding energy and environment at Business and Social Sciences, which then can be spread to the entire Aarhus University.

Background
The project ‘Sustainable Campus’ (previously entitled ‘Green ASB’) is originally an offshoot of the former ASB’s strategy for 2009-2012 entitled ‘Sustainable growth through innovation’.

The project was launched in May 2010 in connection with a workshop, which allowed students and employees to share their ideas and inputs as to how the then ASB’s service and administration could be greener – i.e. more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. The project started in earnest in September 2010, where the steering committee of the project, in cooperation with Rambøll, identified the project’s focus areas and objectives.

Since the merger with the Faculty of Social Sciences, the management has decided that the project should continue based on the buildings on Fuglesangs Allé. In time, it will spread to the entire building stock of the main academic area and to as many employees and students as possible.

The project is supported by AU’s Facilities Management Department and has the status of a pilot project with the long-term objective of using the concept and the experiences gained at the entire AU.

Sustainable Campus has resulted in a climate partnership agreement between Business and Social Sciences and Aarhus Municipality about active participation in making Aarhus CO2 neutral by 2030.
